Some meals taste better with salt air in them.<\/p>\n\n

Pacific Fish Center \u2014 the Korean seafood spot locals call \ud55c\uad6d\ud69f\uc9d1 \u2014 sits right on the Redondo Beach waterfront, not far from the airport.<\/p>\n\n

Inside it\u2019s a plainly casual seafood house. But step out and the ocean is right there, and that view does half the work.<\/p>\n\n

I came for the crab. I left a little in love.<\/p>\n\n

    It\u2019s an easy trip if you\u2019re near LAX, and the beachfront setting makes it feel like a little getaway. The dining room itself is simple and casual \u2014 this is a roll-up-your-sleeves seafood place, not a fancy one \u2014 but with the water right outside, that\u2019s exactly right.<\/p>\n\n

    The star: steamed Dungeness crab (and why I prefer it to Alaskan)<\/h2>\n\n

    Here\u2019s my take: the simple steamed Dungeness crab here is better to me than the famous Alaskan crab everyone raves about.<\/p>\n\n

    Why? I think it\u2019s the salt \u2014 or rather, the lack of it. The crab here isn\u2019t over-salted, so the sweet, clean flavor of the meat comes through. I really don\u2019t like things too salty, and this lets the crab just taste like crab. Steamed to order, sweet, tender \u2014 it\u2019s the dish I think about afterward.<\/p>\n\n

    Beyond the crab: sashimi, clams, and a spicy seafood stew<\/h2>\n\n

    If you want to make a spread of it, the sashimi is fresh and clean \u2014 proper Korean hwe<\/em>. The steamed clams are simple and sweet.<\/p>\n\n

    And to warm things up, the spicy seafood stew (haemul-tang) is the comforting, bubbling finish \u2014 packed with crab and shellfish.<\/p>\n\n
